Considerations for choosing a contractor

Question
- Try to pick a contractor that has been in business at least TEN YEARS. Hopefully that means they’re serious and in business for the long haul, not just a quick buck.
- Try and pick a contractor who comes recommended by a friend or relative of yours. A good referral is a powerful thing.
- Make absolutely CERTAIN that the person who comes to your home is a Certified RED SEAL refrigeration tech, and not just a salesperson. A salesperson will typically know only enough to sell you a heat pump. A real TECH will bring a lot of knowledge to the conversation, and be able to advise you on many things a salesperson could not.A Red Seal will always have his/her ticket with them. Ask to see it!
- Insist on a proper, typed quotation that delineates the exact scope and nature of the work to be completed. Ensure that it includes brand names, model numbers, warranty information, exact price and payment terms. Also ask about payment options, like terms and payment methods.
- It is Critical to ask to see the following, and to get these in writing as part of the quotation:
- A copy of their Commercial Liability Insurance
- A Clearance Letter from Workers Comp showing them as up to date
- A list of their employee safety certifications (WHMIS, First Aid, Fall Protection)
- Ask if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau
- If, in the end, you have any misgivings or uneasiness about doing business with them, then don’t do it. Interview another contractor.
